Background

Sonia Fynn SWAc has worked continuously as an artist and illustrator since leaving college where she studied fine art, painting and sculpture. In the last ten years she has concentrated solely on painting, working from her studio in Chagford, Devon located within the Dartmoor National Park. In 2006 she was elected to the South West Academy with whom she has exhibited for the last eight years.


Training

1959-1961 - Harrow School of Art Junior Department.

1961-1963 - Harrow School of Art.

1963-1967 - Farnham School of Art.


Artist and Illustrator to the Examining Boards

1967-1972 - In house artist and illustrator for the Associated Examining Board.

1972-2000 - Freelance artist and illustrator for the Associated Examining Board, The Southern Examining Group (incorporating the Oxford and Cambridge Examining Boards) and The London and East Anglian Board.


Teaching

1984-1994 - Throughout this period, one to one fee paying tuition in drawing and painting for students requiring a portfolio for entrance to specific school and university courses also drawing classes for individuals looking for improved skills.

Painting

Painting has always been Sonia Fynn's major passion. She is inspired by colour but her technique is based on sound basic drawing skills developed from early success in drawing at Harrow. Her medium has developed from oils to watercolour and most recently, the use of acrylic in overlaid washes. She has been most successful with landscape and architecture, developing picture series in each of the areas she has lived, including the United States, at the same time as exploiting her extensive travel in Europe. She has also undertaken a number of private commissions. Her portfolio includes pictures from Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Buckinghamshire, Columbus, Ohio and Devon. She has painted extensively in Spain, Italy including Venice, and Greece.


Printing

For the most popular picture series and certain drawings, Sonia Fynn has worked with fine art printers to produce limited editions that have proved to be a successful and affordable alternative to the original works.
