America

A breathtaking downwards view with the river almost a mile below. My first view was in bright sunlight but the weather was closing so photographs and rapid colour notes were the best way to capture the moment. Minutes later a snow flurry obscured everything below. Click here for more.
Devon

Since moving to Devon I have taken advantage of the unique surroundings and produced many paintings, a few of which are included here. The subjects of these paintings are things I see every day, but the continually changing light transforms them moment to moment. Click here for more.
Italy

These pieces were created over several visits to Tuscany, between 1999 and 2006. The light and heat of Italy produce a rich atmosphere which is immediately inspiring to a painter arriving from northern climes. Click here for more.
Venice

What hasn't already been said about Venice? I started with the more traditional painterly subjects, the crumbling walls reflected in the waters of the canals and so forth. On Burano, however, I found that even the humbler houses were brightly painted works of art in themselves. Click here for more.
Roseland Lilypool

Rosemary Bleakman's garden in Chagford is full of magical subjects for paintings. I had been looking to paint another lily pool after being overwhelmed by the intense beauty of the pools in the Giardino Botanical Gardens in Lucca in 1999 (see Italy series above), but no ordinary lily pool would do! Tortola

As in Burano, artists had already worked directly on the buildings! The light in the Carribbean is just incredible. As an experiment, I switched to watercolour to see if I could get the intensity of colour that I was getting with the acrylics, but with the delicacy of watercolour technique. Click here for more.
Andalucia

I stayed in Gaucin, one of the famous 'white villages' of Andalucia, and was amazed by the ever changing weather and light conditions of the region. The village was at considerable altitude, and the rarified air allowed an unusual clarity of colour. Click here for more.
Peloponnese

Mistras was an important fortified Byzantine city, and people come from all over the world to see its ancient ruins and artifacts. However, in the midst of this grandeur, I found that my eye was drawn by the the small things, doorways, courtyards, glimpses of ordinary life transfigured by the magical light. As we walked up to the city the way was strewn with fresh ripe figs. Click here for more.
Orkney

I was travelling from Scrabster to Stromness as dawn broke over the Orkneys. Expecting the muted colours of the north, this incredible red came as a shock. I took a fast series of photographs for reference and produced these in the studio. Click here for more.
